A nice-to-have feature would be the ability to hide the menu icon (for the button), so that it only sports a label like the places plugin. Currently it is only possible to hide the button's label, but not the icon, and the items' icons.
Created attachment 3202 xfdesktop-4.6.2-button-icon-label-combo.patch Attached patch implements the enhancement for xfdesktop-4.6.2 by providing a combo box to choose from "Only label", "Only icon" and "Icon and label" similar to the xfce4-places-plugin.
Created attachment 3203 xfdesktop-4.6.2-german-translation.patch Updated german translation for the changes in xfdesktop-4.6.2-button-icon-label-combo.patch.
Reassigning to applications menu plugin from Xfce4-panel.

Ah, I already forgot about that one. Unfortunately, these patches are for the old version only. If there is interest, I could write new ones for the current xfce4-panel plugin. I did not do so due to lack of time and interest. Otherwise you might as well close this bug.
