Created attachment 2489
An image showing some of my shortcuts.

After I have configured my keyboard shortcuts in xfce4-keyboard-settings->Application Shortcuts shortcuts just won't work.
For example, xfrun4 = Alt+F3. But it does not work. All of them.

Is xfce4-settings-helper running? Do you use any exotic keyboard layout? Can you post your X server configuration (at least the keyboard part)?

Yes, xfce4-settings-helper is running.
No, I don't use any exotic keyboard layout.
Here goes my X server configuration for keyboard:

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier "Keyboard0"
	Driver "kbd"
	Option "XkbModel" "latitude"
	Option "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection

Wow, I don't know why but keyboard shortcuts started to work now.
Maybe it happened because I have manually started xfce4-settings-helper. It works even after reboot.
Comment 4 Jannis Pohlmann editbugs 2009-08-03 19:31:35 CEST
Hmm, weird. Well, I guess there's little we can do now to debug the no-longer-existent issue ;)
Comment 5 Thomas 2009-10-30 19:28:07 CET
Hey Jannis, sorry, but I think the bug is still alive... I am startig xfce and sometimes the keyboard-shortcuts don't work. Untill I do a "killall xfce4-settings-helper" which causes the helper to close, but something restarts it immediatly - and everything works fine! At the moment I have the command in my autostart-script, but it's not really the best solution...

I am using archlinux, which has rolling releases and the problem occurs since the update to xfce4-settings 4.6.3, I had no problem before that! If I roll back to the previous version the bug is gone. Hope that helps.
Comment 6 gm.illifant 2009-10-30 22:48:57 CET
I have the same problem. Sometimes shortcuts work after restart, sometimes not. And the problem appears since upgrade to xfce4-settings 4.6.3 (Debian testing). I tried to set shortcuts at startup with xfconf-query, but it doesn't help
Comment 7 Brian Lin 2009-12-25 23:25:25 CET
I also have this issue on Arch Linux, Kernel 2.6.31. Killing xfce4-settings-helper fixes the issue because it restarts immediately. It's seemingly random when this issue does or does not come up. I've also had the issue of only a few of my hotkeys working but the other ones being ok.
Comment 8 Benedikt Waldvogel 2010-01-02 12:20:56 CET
I can also still reproduce the bug. In my case only "Alt-F5" (for maximizing windows) is affected. Other shortcuts like Alt-F4 or Alt-F7 work fine.

If I reconfigure Alt-F5 in the settings manager, it works until I suspend or logout. Killing the settings-helper, as recommended here, doesn't work at all for me.

For me, the problem also started to occur when I upgraded to xfce 4.6.

My current system:
 - Gentoo on 2.6.32.2
 - xorg-x11 7.4
 - xorg-server 1.6.5
 - xfwm4 4.6.1
 - xfce4-settings 4.6.3
Comment 9 Lukas Grässlin 2010-02-19 11:14:07 CET
I have the same problem ;)
Using Arch Linux, Xfce 4.6.4

It's a really annoying problem I think :S

Doing a kill -SIGHUP `pidof xfce4-settings-helper` "solves" the problem if the shortcuts don't work, but I really hope you can fix that :=

Comment 11 Nils Stöckmann 2010-03-22 10:47:27 CET
Same here!

Xfce4-settings 4.6.3

Keyboard-Shortcuts usually work for a long time, then suddenly disappear.
If I "killall xfce4-settings-helper" they work again.

New Discovery:
ALT+F2 is usually linked to xfrun4. When Keyboard shortcuts work and i have focus on a terminal, pressing the combo opens xfrun4.
As long as the Shortcuts don't work (before killall...) pressing Alt+F2 leads to ";3Q" (without quot.marks) being typed into the console!

Hope that helps to solve the problem.

More precisely :
- Only keyboard shortcut in the Window Manager that is not saved after reboot. (Keyboard short I set in Keyboard setting work perfectly)
- Killing xfce4-settings-helper doesn't solve the problem. Just after reboot, xfce4-settings-helper is running. When I kill it, it restart immediately but nothing change.
- "xfconf-query -c xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts -vl" show that my shortcut is configured correctly.
- I have to set the keyboard shortcut in Window Manager to make it work after each boot.
- I set my shortcut as root in /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml : doesn't work neither
- Weird thing : I have a netbook with xfce4-setting 4.6.4 with OpenSuse 11.2 and the shortcut work !

This bug is intermittent, and quite irritating. A fix slightly more reliable than killing and restarting xfce4-settings-helper is to open the keyboard shortcuts panel, and just re-assign the shortcuts to what they already were... then somehow, they want to work.

I don't even have to tell you how much of a royal PITA that is.

I can confirm this bug as well, even under Xfce 4.6.2.

This happens under openSUSE, Arch Linux, and Ubuntu, so it is obviously an upstream bug.

Doing the following fixed this for me on two different machines:

mv /etc/xdg/autostart/xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop /etc/xdg/autostart/xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop.disabled

mv ~/.config/autostart/xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop ~/.config/autostart/xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop.disabled

It doesn't work for me. (Ubuntu 10.04, xfce 4.6.1)
I mean, I use autologin. When I boot and it autologin, the shortcuts don't work. But if I re-log (logout then re-login) , the shortcuts work !
So I tried : Disable autologin, reboot, login then the shortcut work !

The problem come from autologin process ???

The problem was happening for me on two different computers with different distros, *without* using autologin. Doing the above steps fixed the problem for both computers.

Make sure there is no entry for "Xfce Settings Helper" when you check Settings > Session and Startup > Application Autostart

If an entry still exists, you need to remove or rename the .desktop in both locations so that it is not recreated to generate an autostart application (xfce4-settings-helper) for the current user.

I must also add, simply "unchecking" the startup entry will not work. The .desktop files need to manually be removed or renamed on both locations.
Comment 18 M. H. Trinh 2010-09-25 15:54:34 CEST
I did everything as flan_suse suggested.
I confirm this bug is related to autologin. I tried autologin with kdm, slim and without a displaymanager : the keyboard shortcut (eg switch to desktop #) assign in "Window Manager" setting doesn't work. The other shortcuts in "Keyboard" setting (aka Application Shortcuts) work normally.
All the shortcut work when I re-log.

For autologin with gdm : all the shortcut work without reloging but in this case, the login screen show up for 2s before xfce is started, while the other displaymanager don't show up when autologin

I'm currently using Arch Linux with kernel 2.6.35-ARCH, with Xfce 4.6.2

Hopefully this will help to track this bug

I'm finding that autologin does not affect this for me. I use autologin on a fully updated Arch install with Xfce, and I can still use my keyboard shortcuts without a problem (after applying the above steps.) If I undo the steps above, the problem returns: shortcuts *might* or *might not* work with each login. And it doesn't even matter if I use autologin or not, or even if I don't use a login manager, like GDM or LXDM.

This is why I'm not sure if autologin really matters. And I find this to be true on Xubuntu, openSUSE, and Arch, on different machines. When I don't use autologin, my keyboard shortcuts *might* or *might not* work. If I use autologin, it's the same thing. But if I repeat the above steps, it fixes the problem, whether or not I use autologin or a login manager.

You are not referring to the keyboard shortcuts set in Keyboard > Application Shortcuts? Only the ones under Window Manager? The original bug report is referring to xfce4-keyboard-settings -> Application Shortcuts.
Comment 20 Thomas 2010-09-26 09:49:39 CEST
I never used autologin and sometimes the shortcut ar not working. But I have to admit that the error doesn't occure as often as in the past. I just had a look on it, I have disabled all my tricks for xfce4-settings-helper. As it helps, to restart the xfce4-settings-helper later after logon, I think, the error wouldn't happen, if the settings-helper wouldn't start at logon, but later. Maybe there is some kind of conflict during logon. But the error occurs too rarely here (maybe oince a month), so I cannot really reproduce or test/debug something :-(
Comment 21 M. H. Trinh 2010-09-26 10:54:13 CEST
Yes, my problem is only the shorcut assign in "Window Manager", to switch desktop. May be I have create an another bug ??

Thank you, that solved the problem for me too. Shortcuts work imediatelly after login without any tricks. Also no issues after wakeup from suspend / hibernate.

Did you follow both steps? There's two parts to the fix. The comment you replied to only shows the first half of the workaround. Read the previous comments above, because you might have missed something.

As we speak, this has worked for me on four different PCs now, all using Xfce on different distros.

Anyone tried xfce4-settings-4.7.2, because there is a fix for his in master for quite some time. You need libxfce4ui and exo-0.5 to compile this. Sources are here: http://archive.xfce.org/src/xfce/

window manager

If I set shortcuts in settings -> xfce4 settings -> window manager, then they work.
if I reboot no shortcuts, if I log out and then log in again, they work.
(I'm using autologin)

I tried to rename/delete the files as flan suggested but nothing changes.

killing and reload xfce4-settings-helper does not work (I need to log out an in)

I also tried to set by hand shortcuts in files
/etc/xdg/xdg-xubuntu/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml
/etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml

nothing happened

The fix I posted is not for the Window Manager shortcuts. It's for the Keyboard Application Shortcuts only. Menu > Settings > Keyboard > Application Shortcuts

It was brought up before in this bug report. Refer to comment #19 and #21.

The Window Manager bug might need its own separate bug report.

Ok, sorry. (I found bug 5537, that seems to be more appropriate, but there is no discussion activity there...)
Comment 31 Jannis Pohlmann editbugs 2010-11-13 13:09:46 CET
I'm sorry guys but I can't reproduce it at all. I have xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop and I never lose my shortcuts. If you have to kill xfce4-settings-helper to make it work again, then maybe it's hanging or something. But I don't know where to start fixing it because there is nothing to start with really...
Comment 32 Nick Schermer editbugs 2010-11-13 20:00:48 CET
I improved this in 4.7 already, nobody tried it, so closing the bug. If you can still reproduce this with xfce4-settings 4.7.4, feel free to reopen the bug.
Comment 33 saintiss 2011-01-16 22:39:16 CET
In case this bug gets reopened:

in my case, all shortcuts work, except the brightness keys (FN+UP and FN+DOWN).

killing the settings helper makes them work. However, killing the settings helper from an autostart script does not seem to help. It is necessary to kill it manually from a terminal when login has completed.

I would like to point out that in Openbox the shortcuts always work, EXCEPT when I login to XFCE first and fail to kill the settings helper there. Obviously, Openbox does not use the settings helper, so this means the settings helper really "breaks" something, and "resets" it upon being restarted.

(tested using xfce4-settings 4.6.5)
Comment 34 Klaus Kusche 2011-06-14 09:39:18 CEST
Please reopen:
Same problem (or problem 4226) here on latest 4.8 (settings 4.8.2, wm 4.8.1):
* After login, the wm shortcuts do not work.
Instead, the escape sequences appear in the terminal.
The global keyboard (application) shortcuts work from the beginning.
* Restarting xfwm with "xfwm4 --replace" always cures the problem,
re-login helps in most cases, but not always.
* I also noticed the double startup of the settings manager:
One instance is started by the session management
(it is part of the saved session) and another one by autostart:
"xfce4-settings-helper: Another instance is already running. Leaving..."
I'll try to fix this and report if that makes the shortcuts work.
Comment 35 Klaus Kusche 2011-06-14 10:21:01 CEST
Applied the settings helper fixes mentioned above.
They do fix the "Another instance is already running. Leaving..." message,
but that does *not* fix the keyboard shortcut problem.

Also, restarting the settings helper manually does not fix the shortcuts problem.

This is all .xsession-errors contains for my startup:
"(xfce4-panel:2727): libwindowmenu-CRITICAL **: windowmenu.c:622 (window_menu_plugin_active_window_changed): expression 'WNCK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed.
libpager-Message: Failed to set the number of pager rows. You probably have more than 1 pager in your panel setup."

(I double-checked: I *don't* have two pagers in my panel)

.xsession-errors looks exactly the same on initial login (shortkeys don't work)
and on re-login (shortkeys work).

I think this is some kind of race condition...

Can you reproduce this when running the git master branch? I don't want the backport of some patches, I want the full branch with xfce4-settings-helper/xfsettingsd merge, new shortcuts code, etc. If yes, please open a new bug report so that we can track this.

Thank you in advance,

Upgraded to today's git and did some experiments.
There still is a serious problem with xfwm and shortkeys,
but I believe it is different from this one and 4226.

I will open new reports.
Leave this one resolved fixed.
