XFCE 4.4.2 Suse 10.3 Current behavior with Orage 4.4.2: When creating an event with an alarm, settings are blank. If the user sets alarm settings for an event, they must do the same for the next event which they want an alarm (set time before event for alarm & alarm sound file). Proposed change in behavior: 1). Add an "enable Alarm" checkbox in the Alarm tab of the "New Appointment" window, or in General tab of the "New Appointment" window. 2). In the Orage Preferences. allow user to set alarm settings defaults for events (sound file, time before event, if alarm is to be enabled for new events by default). If user does not select "enable alarm for all new events" in Orage Preferences, use these settings as defaults when user selects the "enable Alarm" check box when modifying/creating a new event. OR Remember Alarm tab settings from the last time an alarm was used. This would probably require the addition of an "enable Alarm" checkbox somewhere so that alarms were not enabled for all subsiquent events.
Try copy appointment. It should work better than what you describe here, since you can actually have several different defaults? I am not convinced that one set of defaults helps a lot. Usually people have different kind of appointments, which need different kind of defaults. Copying should work better?

Copying > should work better? Duplication of an appointment requires additional work - first the user must find a compatible appointment then adjust it to their requirements. <IMO> It would be faster to create an appointment from reasonable/user set defaults than to find an older version of the appointment, duplicate it, and then adjust it.</IMO>.
searching default templates and adjusting them is close to searching old appointments and editing them. It is very similar actions. But maintaining templates is extra effort both for users and development and also uses memory. I am not convinced that it is worth investing time and computer memory. I however will consider adding possibility to modify NEW appointment defaults. That is only one set of defaults, but users could maintain those.

This is in Orage 4.5.13.6 revision 26675. Added possibility to save alarm settings, which will be used as default for new appointments. Also made it possible to reset to the default alarm settings.
available in 4.6.0 in appointment alarm screen.
