enhancement request: please add a means to lock the transparency of the panel so
it does NOT go opaque when you mouse over it. i find the flashing effect you
get as you move you mouse on and off the panel not desiderable. i would like to
lock down the transparency so it stays that way always.

I don't want anything to do with this, this patch has been rejected before and
I'm fine with that. If you don't like it (or maybe even hate it) feel free to
close this bug Jasper.

i would be content with a simple yes/no check box "panel goes opaque on
mouse-over" or something similar. it was not my intention to ressurect a
previously rejected patch, or to restart old arguments. nick's patch
coincidentally happened to address my concerns. please consider doing something
along these lines. the flashing effect stands out as an ergonomic problem for
my tired old eyes.

Hehe. No worries. I can't remember why I rejected it, so I will look at it
again. No promisses though...

I'm considering a checkbox. I'm not sure about the best text. Some quick ideas:

"[ ] Use transparency for active panel"

"[x] Active panel is not transparent."

"[x] Remove transparency for active panel"

Any suggestions?

Personally I'd prefer the 2 sliders because it's compact and it gives you the
most flexibility (and it looks cool in my dialog mockups ^_^), but I you want to
"lock" the transparency you can use a checkbox with something like "Use
transparency when hover panel":

None --####--------------------- Full
        20
[x] Use transparency when hover panel

But that's just my 0,02...
Comment 9 Philip Kovacs 2006-02-14 20:08:37 CET
Or:

[x] Active panel is opaque.

with a default of Yes/Checked to be consistent with current behavior.
Unchecked it would retain the transparency setting when active.

Nick,

> "[x] Use transparency when hover panel"

That's not correct English. Also, think of the translators, I think this will
quickly become a lot of text to explain in many languages.

Philip,

> "[x] Active panel is opaque"

Yeah, I like that one. I was afraid 'opaque' might be a bit uncommon or
difficult, especially for non-native speakers, but on the other hand I think
xfwm uses it as well.

I'll probably never speak English very well... Thanks for telling me ^_~.
Probably just a couple of words like for, while, if, else, select and case :P.

> "[x] Active panel is opaque"
That a lot better but opaque isn't very translatable IMHO (nl: ondoorzichtig).
You can use an antonym and invert the checkbox behaviour, because
transparent or translucent are more common in this case (maybe take a look in
KDE and friends?).

Anyway this will probably end in an endless debate, so use the opaque version...
