Menu item 'Revert' works, but complains that it didn't.

Clicking the "Revert" menu item under the "File" menu causes an error dialog to appear stating: "Failed to reload the document.".  This happens even if no other
editor has altered the file.

This appears to be a harmless message - if the file is altered by some other editor, the file is reloaded properly, and any changes made by the other editor are properly seen in the reloaded document.

Forgot to mention - this is under Debian "Jessie" with all recent updates applied.

Arrgh,,,  I don't know why I didn't find this in an earlier search, but I see the problem was resolved.

Sorry for the noise.  Now I just have to wait for Debian to advance to the next stable release.
