Thunar 1.6.x doesn't drag-and-drop with the right mouse button

Description Nikos Theodorou 2012-12-12 15:29:11 CET
Hallo.

Under Thunar 1.4 (I've never used 1.5, I can't talk about it), it was possible to drag-and-drop using the right mouse button, in which case a small menu opened asking whether I wanted to copy, move or link the selected item(s).

Since 1.6 this is no longer possible. I cannot drag using the right button. All that happens is to open to proper right mouse button (create new, open with, etc), but it doesn't drag.

I have no logs to provide (nothing shows up), but if there is any information i can give, please ask.

"Remove right-click drag possibility (bug #3549)."

I see. Well, in my opinion, it's a very useful feature allowing the user to act differently from the default and without using the ctrl/shift keys (anyway, many of us non-english native speakers use ctrl-shirt as the combination to switch keyboard layouts, though this can be easily changed, of course.

Perhaps you can add it as an optional feature? Or transfer to the middle button (as Nautilus) or to the left (as Dolphin)?

I agree with Nikos; this is a very useful feature!

There doesn't seem to be a way to create symlinks without the right-click drag menu.

(Another possibility is to use middle-click drag, like Nautilus.)

A disgusting yet functional patch to re-include this functionality

Please see:

Thank you.

Thank you for the patch, drcouzelis. I hope that this functionality gets added back in at some point.

Completely missed the point of this feature, my bad. Fixed in bb96457.

Yay! Thanks :-)

By the way, is it possible to add a "copy here" option, to implement a "cp file copy-of-file", while you're at it?

This bug is still present in Thunar 1.6.10.

I'd also like the pop-up menu on right-drag behaviour officially reinstated. The bug does not appear to be resolved/fixed on Xubuntu 14.04 LTS + updates, Thunar 1.6.3 (Xfce 4.10), xfwm4 version 4.11.1.

Currently for me left-drag does a move (on the same partition) or copy (across partitions) - for the latter, shift-left-drag changes the copy to a move.

End-users shouldn't need to be aware of the underlying partitioning to know what behaviour they'll get each time. The right-drag pop-up menu was the most convenient way for the user to choose the behaviour they want each time without having to do separate and tedious cut/copy and paste or "Make Link" operations.

Hello. I am still unable to do a right-click drag and drop with Thunar 1.6.15 because as soon as I click the right mouse button the context menu shows up. Is there a patch or something I can do to add right-click drag and drop with context menus to Thunar 1.6.15. And if so, could someone please guide me on how to install it?

Humm, if I take a try for right-click drag on thunar master/1.8.x, it just moves the file (I can hold STRG to copy instead ) .. so it's pretty much the same than left-click drag there, no context menu at all. Looks like a regression, since with 1.6.x I can see the menu.

I opened a new bug for it: Bug #14583

Regarding your problem: May I ask you to check if you can do right-click drag & drop with thunar 1.8.1 ? ( if your distro does not provide this version, it could be required to compile thunar from source )

Bug #9625
