After last update temperature information started to be displayed verticaly, which looks bad.
Earlier versions did it horizontaly.

Yes, that's intentional. The plugin finally conforms to the panel plugins HIG, like most other plugins (e.g. clock, places,...).

Vertical mode
* Widgets are placed vertically
* Labels are rotated to 90 degrees
* Progressbars are placed horizontally

You might try the new deskbar mode of the panel, perhaps you like it better?
