It would be nice to be able to configure a larger terminal window by default.  I am unable to find anything in preferences that would accomplish this.

Hello David,

It's a hidden option, you need to edit the configuration file manually.

http://docs.xfce.org/apps/terminal/advanced#MiscDefaultGeometry

As stated in the documentation, you will find the configuration file under this location: ${XDG_CONFIG_HOME}/Terminal/terminalrc
