I wrote a patch that adds the option "Handle position" to the "Appearance" section of the Xfce Panel Settings dialog. After having applied this patch you can now easily choose to have the panel handle(s) on the left/right side, both or no handles at all.

Thanks. I didn't use your patch, but the 4.4 panel now has the option to choose handle style.
