I am using a Dell Latitude E6510 laptop. In addition to the built in LCD panel, it also has both VGA and DVI output connectors. A hotkey combination (Fn-F8) correctly brings up xfce4-display-settings. When I have the laptop panel active and have my external monitor plugged into the VGA connector, xfce4-display-settings shows me the following options: * LGD 15" * Dell 23" * Both displays cloned When I have the laptop panel active and have my external monitor plugged into the DVI connector, xfce4-display-settings shows me the following options: * LGD 15" * DP-1 * Both displays cloned Note that it doesn't identify my monitor the same way on both outputs. (Not my main problem, but possibly related.) The main issue is when I have the laptop panel active and have my external monitor plugged into the DVI connector, and I select DP-1 in xfce4-display-settings, it changes the output to the VGA connector output instead of the DVI output. This of course leaves both panels blank. I have to plug in to the VGA connector to see my screen and be able to fix it. This is not terrible in my case, because I happen to have a monitor with both input types and have both cables handy. But for someone that was only connected with DVI they would loose all display and perhaps not know how to get back to a working desktop. It's possible some other "blank screen" or "no output" issues posted here might be this scenario.
