Running the command "xfce4-popup-places" does nothing at all. I expect it to pop up the "Places" menu applet. (Just to confirm which applet this is: right-click panel, panel preferences, items tab, applet is called "Panel (external)".)

The other xfce4-popup-* commands pop up okay (applicationsmenu, windowmenu, directorymenu). Furthermore, xfce4-popup-places writes nothing to the console no matter what arguments I pass it. All the other xfce4-popup-* commands display something when given "--help" as an argument.
