No it never worked, it is a hardcoded value in the terminalrc file: MiscDefaultGeometry.
Then how did the old version remember the setting??
Not something restored by the terminal, maybe you used another application like devilspie. If you can give me the version that worked i can check, but I'm 99% sure this was never supported.
