Description whatmeurgent 2011-05-13 20:08:15 CEST
Summary: A file copied to a vfat usb drive by root can not be deleted by root, but can be deleted by an unprivileged user. (I think this is a cool little bug)

01] As an unprivileged user, Mount a vfat usb drive
02] Open thunar (instance #1) and navigate thunar to the usb drive
03] Open a terminal and su ; thunar & (instance #2)
04] navigate to /root
05] select a file, and ctrl-c
06] change focus to thunar instance #1 (showing usb drive)
07] ctrl-v [this results in an access permission error. One might argue that this is a bug, but I think it's reasonable to call it a security feature, possibly isolating and protecting root's clipboard buffer from a non-privileged process].
08] change focus to thunar instance #2 (su)
09] ctrl-n to create instance #3 of thunar, with root privileges
10] navigate thunar instance #3 to the usb
11] ctrl-v - works [as it should]
12] try deleting the file from that same thunar instance #3 - error message is trash not found or unavailable.
13] change focus to thunar instance #1 (the one without root privileges)
14] try deleting that same file - it works!

Summary: A file copied to a vfat usb drive by root can not be deleted by root, but can be deleted by an unprivileged user. (I think this is a cool little bug)

Not that the root user can not delete
Comment 3 David Segura M 2012-08-06 02:05:16 CEST
Not that the root user can not delete files and the normal user can, but more in the way of the dupiclate error 7626, for a NTFS partition when the normal user try to delete a file it shows the message "Can't find or create the trash directory" , as root user you CAN delete the files. But also as normal user you can do it BUT ONLY if you use the permanently delete shortcut Shift + supr.
