Wobbling icons in notification area, 100% cpu usage
Status:
RESOLVED: FIXED
Product:
Xfce4-panel
Component:
Notification Area

Description combuster@archlinux.us 2011-05-08 17:05:28 CEST
When panel size is less than 32px, certain triggers (disabling/enabling compositor, starting app with icon in notification area) consume 100% cpu usage for a short time period (up to 3-4 minutes) and notification-area icons wobble in the process (smaller panel size equals more noticable wobble). Processes that have high cpu usage are X, xfce4-6-systray, and all applications that have icon in notification area (ie, pidgin, transmission, sonata, claws-mail).

When panel size is 32px or more, I can't trigger this behaviour, so my guess is that there is something wrong with shrinking icons in the panel.

I have a wheather-update plugin, application menu, logout dialog, notification area, workspace-switcher, date/time and keyboard switcher plugins active, and only icons in the notification area tend to wobble.

ArchLinux, xf86-video-intel 2.15, xserver 1.10, Xfce 4.8

I encountered this on Dragora as well.
Also, the issue with very small icons has popped up from time to time - that could be related?

I have encountered this behavior here, too. Unfortunately in my case the icons dont stop wobbling even after some minutes. Here is a short screencast to demonstrate the problem: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1507406/out.ogv

I noticed that though the Pidgin icon is wobbling it seems to be related to the Dropbox client for two reasons:

* The problem started to appear after the installation of the Dropbox client.
* Closing the Dropbox client makes the ppidgin icon stop wobbling.

Fixed for me in xfce4-panel 4.8.4.

Disregard my previous comment, bug still occurs. Sorry for misinformation!
Comment 5 Michael Kogan 2011-09-01 11:27:05 CEST
Bug seems to appear only if the border option is activated.
Comment 7 Michael Kogan 2011-09-11 16:38:46 CEST
Now it seems to be fixed! Big thanks!

Fixed it in a somewhat better way. Please try the new patch:

The wobbling still doesn't occur with the new patch. But I have observed following behavior: Sometimes closing an app that uses a systray icon causes an icon of another app to disappear. Just the icons disappears, the reserved place still stays and you can e.g. open the app's menu by clicking on this empty space. I'm not sure whether the problem was introduced by the newest patch or it was already present with the preceding ones. As soon as I'm back home I'll make a screencast to demonstrate the problem.

Sorry, I can't reproduce the disappearing icon problem any more.
Comment 11 Nick Schermer editbugs 2011-09-12 20:07:43 CEST
I've once seen it too, I'll take a look at the code. Thanks for testing.

Tried it for a couple of days, but I've not seen any icons disappear.
Comment 13 Michael Kogan 2011-10-12 17:26:04 CEST
After some weeks of usage (after the fix was delivered by the distribution) I haven't seen the disappearing icon problem beside of the very first start after the update. So I think that this bug can be marked as fixed.
