I'm attaching a patch that adds a checkbox to the tweaks/placement dialog. Enabling it switches on the patch that Olivier posted to the mailing list.
(Disclaimer: most of what I changed was cargo-cult copying. It seems to work, though.)

I've been running the patch on three different machines for a while now, and would claim that it's stable. Thing is, since I patch the user interface pre-autogen, it's much more difficult to maintain the patch on top of the Gentoo
