xfapplet only supports the deprecated bonobo based applets but not the dbus panel applet API introduced in GNOME 2.32. Many useful applets are now unusable in Xfce. On the other hand I have no idea what the future of gnome-panel and it's applets it. I doubt it will be maintained well now that gnome-shell is about to become the default and the classic desktop is only used as fallback. This being said I don't know if it's worth the effort.
