A side pane shortcut to a remote location (sftp, smb) can be created by e.g. dragging the folder icon in the location bar to the side pane while a network location is mounted. The icon however disappears from the side pane when the remote filesystem is detached (e.g. using xfce4-gvfs-mount or by rebooting the system). This makes the side pane unsuitable for remembering network locations. (the shortcut is not lost and reappears when the location is mounted again)
