configure command does not accept --disable-debug option

The web page http://www.xfce.org/download/building recommends to use the option --disable-debug with the configure command.  The command does not appear to accept this option, and produces the following error message:
configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --disable-debug

I now believe this probably applies to the configure program of only the package xfce4-dev-tools.
