The first icon in the notification area is 'invisible'. This can be seen when loading something like nm-applet: the network manager icon should appear in the systray but does not. When another application that uses the systray is run (say, empathy), now the network manager icon becomes visible, while the empathy one is invisible (right-mouse clicking in the place the icon should be brings up the application's menu, so it's clearly there).
