This bug has been reported on Ubuntu Launchpad as: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/664627 Xubuntu 10.10, 10.04 I have three panels configured to autohide. When I go to unmount an flash flash drive or cd from its icon on the places applet in the panel, the autohide is disabled and the panel remains visible. This behaviour is the same in both 10.10 and 10.04. The only solution is to "killall xfce4-panel" then restart them in the Alt-F2 run box. If I unmount from within an actual instance of Thunar the problem does not happen. (In reply to comment #0) I experience this bug using xfce4-panel 4.6.3-1ubuntu2. Workaround: To make the panel hide again after the unmount using Places, I again click on the Places icon (the folder icon) and then click away. This seems to reset the autohide.
This is still an issue in xfce 4.8 with panel: 4.8.6 and places-plugin: 1.2.0. To be more precise, it happens when right clicking an entry (you don't even have to select a menu item). The correct autohide behavior can only be restored by a xfce4-panel -r.
Fixed in http://git.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-places-plugin/commit/?id=e2dc769ea98497ac1b26f42eab5ef1db980e61f4
