The desktop Trash icon is not updated when trash content changes. 

Trash remains in "Empty" status.

The "Empty Trash" menu item is always disabled.

The same in the final 4.8 release. Seems to be xfdesktop problem, cause Thunar shows this icon correctly.

Yes, it is a known issue that will be fixed before xfdesktop 4.8.1.

Fix in two separate commits to master that I am also going to apply to the xfce-4.8 branch before the xfdesktop 4.8.1 release:
