This bug has been reported to Ubuntu Launchpad as:

In thunar filenames not seen. In desktop filenames seen.
Xfcedesktop has good idea showing files about to be deleted but for many files better would be thunar delete window..

This one was fixed in 1.2.x (we already closed it in ubuntu and forgot to close it here).
