From gnome-terminal, if one do :
$ echo $COLUMNS
80

then from vi, ask to enlarge the columns to 81
$ vi /tmp/a +"set co=81" +:q

then the terminal is automatically resized, to be in accordance with the request from vi

$ echo $COLUMNS
81

It would be nice to have this feature in xfce4-terminal (or its replacement)
