Transparency does not function.
The chosen background color is shown.
Transparency % does not affect result.
Transparency == 100%  still is opaque.
No error is output to the console when xfce4-terminal is started from the command line.

Do you have compositing enabled in the window manager? And is compositing enabled at all (xfwm4 --version)?
