slim in /etc/ttys causes xfdesktop to core dump.

I'm trying to configure SLiM to start at boot time using /etc/ttys.
This does work fine without issue when using xdm. I suspect this is
a slim environment problem that is affecting xfdesktop adversely.

Below is how to duplicate the problem and additional information as
to state:

1. Assert xfce4

cd
# For slim
ln -s /usr/pkg/bin/startxfce4 .xinitrc
# For xdm
ln -s /usr/pkg/bin/startxfce4 .xsession


2. Edit /etc/ttys

ttyE4 "/usr/bin/slim" vs100 on secure

The type field can be anything it appears (unknown, vs100, vt220, ...)

3. kill -s HUP 1

slim login window should appear.

4. Login as user.

At this point a dialogue appears with the message:

Unable to contact settings server.
Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-gumhMXZrvl:
Connection refused

In a separate ssh or console login, it can be seen that the following
processes related to X are running:

/usr/pkg/bin/xfce4-session
/usr/bin/ssh-agent -s
/usr/pkg/bin/dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session
pickup -l -t fifo -u
xscreensaver
/usr/bin/slim ttyE4
/bin/sh /usr/pkg/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc
/usr/X11R7/bin/X -auth /var/run/slim.auth (Xorg)
/usr/pkg/bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 6 --print-address 8 --session


Also ls -la /tmp/dbus* shows

srwxrwxrwx  1 achowe  wheel  0 Feb 28 11:46 /tmp/dbus-VsXHFy2vVE

5. Click Close.

~/xfdesktop.core is created. /var/log/slim.log shows lots of errors.

6. At this point the following are running:

Desktop is missing, window manager, and other things. It is possible to
start terminal window and get the shell environment:

7. Exit terminal, logout of window session.

a) I presume this is a SLiM environment setup issue, though the xfdesktop.core
would indicate a problem.

b) why is the dbus socket connection being refused?

c) is there a work around for this until SLiM and/or xfce4 have fixes?
