since updating to 4.6.x from 4.4.3, desktop redraw has been unbelievably slow (2s with just one window active). Also flipping across my 5 desktops and back (all but one empty except conky) causes cpu usage to climb >80% on a fast athlon-xp @2.3GHz By a bit of trial and error I found that reverting xfce4-panel and xfdesktop to 4.4.3 restored normal functioning. (Although pick and mix installation is not a satisfactory solution.) killing conky does not affect the bug. x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.3-r7 x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-96.43.13 4.6.0 and 4.6.1 show the same behaviour.

So reverting xfdesktop and xfce4-panel fixes the issue, so this is a bug in xfwm4 because...? > killing conky does not affect the bug. > > x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.3-r7 > x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-96.43.13 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ > > 4.6.0 and 4.6.1 show the same behaviour. This looks a lot like a dup of bug #5326
Oh, and you even posted on that other bug. So what are you trying to set here??
s/set/say/
Actually I had forgotten I'd posted to that bug report. Anyway , since that bug was closed without taking account of what I reported it makes sense to reopen the issue here. You will recall from the end of #5326 that I was asked to install Nautilus to see if there was any difference. This did indeed allow correct switching of desktops without excessive delays. There has has been no response to that information in 2 months. Probably why I forgot ;) You will also recall that I reported this happening on three different version of the legacy nvidia driver (a maintained driver release for older low powered hardware). If I swap openGL to xorg-x11 I get the same slow behavoir as with nvidia. c/xfwm4/xfdesktop/
BTW with 4.4 I can scroll desktops madly back and forth and can't get CPU over 27%, cf 80% with 4.6.x

Why have you duped this to a closed bug?! In #5326 comment 23 you asked if someone could install nautilus to see if it behaved differently. When I stepped up and did what you requested you ignored my information. (which indicated this is an xfdesktop issue) xfdesktop 4.4.3 works on this driver, Nautilus desktop works. That you are not able to reproduce on a more powerful recent card does not negate the bug. The issue remains. Reopening. Please explain why if you wish to close it. thanks.
Because it's the same bug. Repoen the other one if it's still an issue. Filing a new bug with the same or similar contents just to get attention is not acceptable. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 5326 ***
Please also note that as stated above in comment #4 I'd forgotten about the old bug. I did not start this one "just to get attention". I started it to report a serious bug. I can not reopen the other bug since I don't own it. If you think that is preferable please do so. Please also look at my reply to your request for a test with Nautilus.
>> Because it's the same bug. Repoen the other one if it's still an issue. Since I have no access to open the other bug and you have not opened the other bug I'll have to reopen here. To recap my last post to the other bug. Now I have install nautilus and reinstalled xfdesktop 4.6.1 If I quit xfdesktop I get the grey patterned desktop background. On running nautilus it pops up a few icons and adds an bg image. Although I can't flip desktops with the mouse wheel as I do with xfd, it works fast and normally going from one desktop to another, no visual defects. So xfdesktop 4.4.3 works , nautilus works on xfce4-4.6.x but xfdesktop-4.6.x produces a huge cpu load. Seems that there is a definite issue there. If that seems "invalid" please explain why. Otherwise please deal with it here or reopen the other bug report if you feel that is better. regards.
I'm really getting tired of this. Once more and your account gets locked. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 5326 ***
What is getting you tired exactly? In the other bug you asked for someone to install Nautilus and report the results, which I did. You took absolutely no notice and left the bug resolved invalid when clearly there is an issue: you were asking for information. In #8 you suggested that I reopen the other bug. Much as would like to oblige, I can not since it is not my bug so I don't that access. I pointed this out to you twice and asked you to reopen it if you thought that was better. I waited a reasonable time and you failed to act so I have no choice but to reopen the only bug to which I have access. What I'M getting really tired of is the off-hand replies many bugs get on this list. If a user spends time reporting bugs to ensure that the product gets debugged on various hardware that is a contribution to your project not a "oh my god , here's another one". The least you can do is to be courteous rather than irritated. If you don't want info on the bug don't ask me waste my time to install and test something then ignore the results. If you and Olivier don't won't bug reports just shut down bugzilla. Having been very happy with xfce as my main WM for about three years and having encouraged several other people to adopt it, I'm now pissed off and looking for a replacement. Whether you get some power buzz out of blocking the account is irrelevant to me. I certainly won't be wasting any more of my time reporting bugs just to get dismissive replies and arbitrarily closed bugs. Sadly this all too typical of many projects under the gnome banner.
