NetWM hint broken
Status:
RESOLVED: FIXED

Comments

Description sodi 2004-12-04 10:06:23 CET
Looks like NetWM hint (some right thing) is broken, as Guifications appears in
right-bottom corner _on_ panel, instead being in the corner _after_ panel.
Switching ftom XInternAtom to XInternAtoms might have broken this.
Comment 1 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-04 11:38:06 CET
I'm sorry, but I understand really nothing at all in this report. What is a
"Guifications"?

Can you rephrase or provide some screenshot?
Comment 2 sodi 2004-12-04 20:47:17 CET
Created attachment 120

Oh, sorry, I should have explained what Guifications is. GF is Gaim's plugin
that shows a small popup window if someone signes in, goes offline etc.
Comment 3 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-05 08:18:51 CET
Ok, thanks.

And what do you mean by "on" panel and "after" panel? Do that mean that the
applciation window shows above the panel while it used to show under the panel?

(I'm sorry, I really need to characterize the bug the best I can so I can figure
it out...)
Comment 4 sodi 2004-12-05 11:42:34 CET
_On_ the panel is how it is on the screenshot (in the very corner of screen),
but _after_ the panel means it should be ~30px upwards (panel height) and so
avoiding being on/under the panel. Hope you understood me right this time :)
Comment 5 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-05 13:01:05 CET
It's not the net_wm hints being broken (because that whole desktop would be
broken then). It sound like a duplicate of
http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=552

Decreasing the severity to normal, because that's really nothing severe.
Comment 6 sodi 2004-12-05 15:58:59 CET
Yes, I guess it is really nothing major.
It can be that bug, but downgrading to xfwm RC1 resolved the problem. In all,
xfwm seems to be quite broken in RC2.
Comment 7 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-05 16:01:06 CET
RC2 was never released, I'm not sure I understand what are you talking about.
Comment 8 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-05 16:03:03 CET
Also, can you list precisely what else is broken, because "xfwm seems to be
quite broken in RC2" doesn't help in anything.
Comment 9 sodi 2004-12-05 16:07:04 CET
I ment benny's experimental RC2 installer
Comment 10 sodi 2004-12-05 16:10:42 CET
click-on-focus seems to broken also. It doesn't focus until you click on
titlebar, but that's another bug already
Comment 11 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-05 16:15:29 CET
There is no such bug here.

The RC2 from Benny is *unsupported*, I do not know what you are talking about, I
do not know what version is included.

Ask Benny.
Comment 12 Benedikt Meurer editbugs 2004-12-05 16:18:00 CET
The 'RC2' in question is a CVS snapshot from 20041204 (the current .bin in
experimental/ was built today).
Comment 13 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-05 16:35:29 CET
Again, "doesn't focus until you click on titlebar" doesn't help much...

What is your current configuration, what focus model, what is the content of
~/.config/xfce4/xfwm4/xfwm4rc (if any) ?

You really need to provide me with some useful information if you want me to be
able to help; otherwise I am not able to characterize the problem.

Also, it's better to keep one problem per report, so it would be more suitable
to open another bug report for the focus problem.
Comment 14 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-05 18:09:07 CET
At least, the focus problem should be fixed in CVS now.
Comment 15 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-06 06:50:13 CET
Can you please try with this version:
http://www.xfce.org/~olivier/packages/xfwm4-4.1.99.2.tar.gz
Comment 16 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-06 06:53:39 CET
And while you are at it:
http://www.xfce.org/~olivier/packages/xfce4-panel-4.1.99.2.tar.gz
Comment 17 sodi 2004-12-06 15:02:01 CET
I did clear CVS 05.11.04 install, then used those panel and xfwm tarballs and
the results:
* Guifications popup window is still in wrong place;
* focus-on-click has gone better (gaim conversation windows seem to be working
fine, but I still can't randomly focus some windows like xchat, gaim, firefox).

looks like that we have 2 bugs in one report, too bad it happened this way
Comment 18 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-06 21:04:28 CET
The placement problem is now fixed in CVS.

http://www.xfce.org/~olivier/packages/xfce4-panel-4.1.99.2.tar.gz

(same URL, updated package).

I need more information about the focus bug, a way to reproduce the problem
would definitely help.
Comment 19 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-06 21:36:40 CET
I believe all the problems are fixed now. Can you try and report?
Comment 20 sodi 2004-12-06 22:15:41 CET
Just upgraded to
http://www.xfce.org/~olivier/packages/xfwm4-4.1.99.2.tar.gz and
http://www.xfce.org/~olivier/packages/xfce4-panel-4.1.99.2.tar.gz
but no change. Will upgrade everything to latest CVS tomorrow and report back then.
Comment 21 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-07 06:52:02 CET
The placement problem is fixed, I am sure of that.

In case, please update from CVS directly.
Comment 22 sodi 2004-12-07 14:42:22 CET
Just upgraded to CVS, no change. guifications opens in very corner and focus is
buggy. What should I report/attatch about these problems?
Comment 23 sodi 2004-12-07 14:58:24 CET
My xfwm conf:

Focus model:
(o) Click to focus ( ) Focus ....

New window focus:
[ ] Automat.....

Raise on focus:
[X] Automat....
bar is at the max (Fastest)

Raise on click:
[X] Raise window......

I have no ~/.config/xfce4/xfwm4/xfwm4rc
Comment 24 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-07 18:39:53 CET
Interesting. Though I don't see the point of having "Raise on focus" in click to
focus mode.

- Can you try with deselecting the "Raise on focus" option"?
- Do you have a simple way to reproduce the probklem (something like "run A, run
B, click on A, move C, and B should be blahblah while it's not")

TIA
Olivier.
Comment 25 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-07 18:40:52 CET
Ah, your setup clearly shows the problem, indeed. The change in config should
fix it.
Comment 26 sodi 2004-12-07 21:20:04 CET
Now it's
Raise on focus:
[ ] Automat....
but the problem still persists with focus. A way to reproduce the problem? Open
Xfce Settings Manager (in a clean desktop for example, but that doesn't seem to
matter) an you have it. It comes on top but does not recieve focus automatically
and neither with mouse-click in it. I haven't been able to focus it in ~20 times
in a row i tried now.
Comment 27 Olivier Fourdan editbugs 2004-12-07 21:26:51 CET
Ok *everything* should be fixed in this one:

http://www.xfce.org/~olivier/packages/xfwm4-4.1.99.2.tar.gz

Can you try this one?

TIA
Olivier.

Comment 28 sodi 2004-12-07 21:40:31 CET
Now i'm able to focus it by clicking in it :) Looks like clicking in every
window focuses it now.

Guifications window seems to be workinf gine also. Looks like the bug can be
closed now.

Thank you very much for your effort.
