I have to use an older version of the kernel 2.6.19.7 due to incompatabilities with newer kernels and my sound card. When running this kernel plugging my usb stick doesn't make it appear in thunar. If I boot with the stick in or restart the hal daemon then it is visible in thunar. If I remove it then it will dissapear however it wont reapear when I put it back in unless I restart the hal daemon again.

If I use the current kernel 2.6.28 then it works as expected.
