One or more time a day I have to restart xfce4-panel to lower my CPU utilization. I notice that CPU is up - sometimes just from the CPU graph, sometimes a slowdown is noticeable. According to qps, X is the culprit, but killing xfce4-panel and then starting a new instance consistently drops CPU from 40-60% back down to near zero. This has been a problem for several releases (b1, b2, RC1). I use many panel plugins.
I have no idea how to find out what's going on, except for you to remove the plugins one by one and find out which one is causing the problem. I have heard about problems with mail checker in combination with POP3. Perhaps you are using that?
I do not use mailchecker. I have had this problem when all of the following plugins were loaded: - clipboard manager - date & time - notes - windowlist - systemtray - xfce menu Generally I have more plugins loaded, and have also had the problem then. I will try eliminating plugins to see if I can isolate the problem. Trouble is, plugins are very handy!
At this point (after 6 days) I think I can safely say that these plugins DO NOT cause the problem with runaway CPU utilization: - clipboard manager - notes - windowlist - systemtray - xfce menu - desktop switcher - graphical pager - system buttons - xfce clock I will try adding back the following one by one to see what impact they have: - date & time - CPU graph - netload - system load - free space checker - weather update
Any news on this?
CPU graph does not seem to cause a problem. I doubt I will add back the remaining plugins that I used at one point, because now that I can no longer have both the taskbar and the panel at the top of the screen, I now have each side by side, so I don't have the room for more plugins. So I will probably not be able to provide further data points; if that means that the bug should be closed, go ahead. Thanks Craig

I have exactly same problem appearing in 3 workstations, im using debian packages from www.os-works.com, current version of xfce4-panel is 4.2.2 could it have something to do with screensaver ?? i usually notice bug after long idle time. cpu usage is about 100% all of time but i can still restart xfce4-panel and cpu usage returns to normal state t: miikka (In reply to comment #6) > (In reply to comment #5) > > So I will probably not be able to provide further data points; if that means > > that the bug should be closed, go ahead. > > > > Thanks > > Craig > > Ok, thanks for the report.
I get this too (Version 4.2.2). I have to restart X every couple of days to be able to use the computer (otherwise, everything runs really slowly). top says that XFree86 is using all the CPU but this only started happening after I installed XFCE. I'm running Debian Testing. The same happens on another desktop I have that is also running Debian Testing. It also happens on an old latop I have but not on a R40 Thinkpad (both run Debian Testing with broadly the same packages installed). Is there any more information that I could provide to help track down what's causing this?
