I can't get xfce4-terminal to work. Doh! I understood how xfterm4 works: it simply calls an external term. And since for some reason the TERMCMD variable was empty, it didn't work (and I guess it could not launch a term by default because xterm did not exist in my system). Anyway, RTFM
