User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; nl; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008051206 Firefox/3.0
Build Identifier:

Context: Fedora 9 on Virtualbox. Default install does not enter a display mode in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
link to Fedora 9 bug report: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=448057

xfce-setting-show did not work on this fresh install of Fedora9 + XFCE (no Gnome installed). Other dependent apps (non exhaustive) that did not work: display settings, calendar settings and desktop settings. (for more info, please read the Fedora bug).

I tried to run them as user and as root from the command line, and did not get any output (so no error was generated). The xfce-mcs-manager process was running.

When I manually set a display mode in xorg.conf (which was why I tried to call the display settings in the first place) and rebooted, I was able to open xfce-setting-show and its dependent widgets.

Is it possible that xfce-setting-show depends on modes in xorg.conf to be set, in order to run?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install Fedora9 in Virtualbox with XFCE in stead of Gnome
2. xorg.conf contains no mode line but Xorg works fine (but at a very high res)
3. xfce-mcs-manager is running, yet xfce-setting-show can not be opened in any way

Actual Results:
unable to open xfce-setting-show (the 'settings manager' or XFCE control panel), and some of its widgets. Some others (the ones that aren't in the xfce-mcs-manager package) do work (e.g. menu editor)

Expected Results:
open the settings manager
