Hi All, I have a directory with a bunch (see list below) of large files in it. Thunar 0.8.0 chokes when I try to use it on this directory. It takes huge amounts of time, up to a half of an hour, to load the page. Would the Thunar please add a fix for this to their next releases' wish list. Many thanks, -T p.s. I can manipulate this directory from the command line without problem. # ls -ag total 51453924 drwsrwxrwx 6 root 4096 Oct 31 12:23 . drwxr-xr-x 26 root 4096 Nov 9 09:33 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 root 512 Jan 14 2007 2007-01-14_backup-sdb.mbr -rw-r--r-- 1 root 512 Jan 19 2007 2007-01-19_backup-sdb.mbr -rw-r--r-- 1 root 645762416 Sep 3 20:15 2007-09-03_OurStuffDump.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 1028809498 Sep 9 21:08 2007-09-09_OurStuffDump.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 1030171805 Sep 14 18:56 2007-09-14_OurStuffDump.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 1026014008 Sep 17 21:13 2007-09-17_OurStuffDump.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 993974068 Sep 21 20:17 2007-09-21_OurStuffDump.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 649122695 Sep 30 22:47 2007-09-30_OurStuffDump.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 682638893 Oct 5 22:10 2007-10-05_OurStuffDump.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 685774162 Oct 8 22:21 2007-10-08_OurStuffDump.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 696221311 Oct 15 12:40 2007-10-15_OurStuffDump.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 719245568 Oct 24 21:12 2007-10-24_OurStuffDump.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 44472582589 Oct 31 16:14 2007-10-31_linuxDump.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 users 669232 Jan 22 2007 dump -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 1432 Dec 31 2006 Grub.Recovery.txt drwx------ 2 root 16384 May 15 2005 lost+found drwxrwsrwx 27 root 4096 Nov 8 11:10 QuickOurStuffBackup -rw-r--r-- 1 root 842943 Sep 17 17:09 rent-a-nerd104.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 843576 Sep 21 19:11 rent-a-nerd105.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 851116 Oct 8 21:33 rent-a-nerd109.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 851224 Oct 8 22:16 rent-a-nerd110.tar.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 root 851089 Oct 15 12:29 rent-a-nerd111.tar.gz -rwxr--r-- 1 users 554342 Mar 30 2007 rent-a-nerd2-13.tar.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 users 554608 Sep 19 21:33 rent-a-nerd2-14.tar.gz -rwxr-xr-x 1 users 829424 Jan 22 2007 restore drwxr-xr-x 2 root 4096 Dec 31 2006 tmp drwx------ 4 users 4096 Jun 28 21:58 .Trash-500
Try to figure out which file types cause the problem. I.e. try to find the smallest subset of files from this folder causing the problem.
Hi Benny, It doesn't matter what type the files are (in the ls example I first posted, they are mostly gz files created by dump). It happens all over my hard drive. It is dependant on the "size" of the files. The directory I keep my ISO files in brings Thunar to tears! $ ls -ag total 5202596 drwxrw-rw- 2 users 4096 Nov 4 12:57 . drwxrw-rw- 22 users 4096 Sep 27 14:55 .. -rwxrw-rw- 1 users 721965056 Dec 31 2006 CentOS-4.4-i386-LiveCD.iso -rwxrw-rw- 1 users 3717459968 Apr 12 2007 CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-DVD.iso -rw-r--r-- 1 users 711890944 Jul 15 21:20 CentOS-5.0-i386-LiveCD.iso -rwxrw-rw- 1 users 309 Dec 31 2006 md5sum-4.4.txt -rwxrw-rw- 1 users 43 Apr 13 2007 md5sum-5.0.devhda.txt -rwxrw-rw- 1 users 123 Jul 15 21:23 md5sum-5.0.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 users 170866688 Nov 4 12:57 SystemRescuecd-x86-0.4.1.iso -T
Thunar itself doesn't care at all for the size of the files. IMHO, the only way to explain this problem (on the thunar side) would be an entry in the shared-mime-info DB that requires to determine MIME type of certain files based on content sniffing. I cannot reproduce your problem here, neither did I ever heard of a similar problem. So it must be something that is different on your system, either content sniffing for certain file types or a problem on the lower levels.
A good way to test would be for you to tell me a different file manager to use and have me time the difference. (Oh my gosh! Did I just volunteer for something?!?!?)
Hi Benedikt, Came up with another way to reproduce the problem: 1) make sure Thunar is off 2) find a "large" file (5GB+) on your hard drive 3) from the command line, start a copy of the file with the cp command: cp LargeFile CopyOfLargeFile 4) while the large file is copying, start Thunar and right click on any file you find in the right pane. It won't work. 5) wait for the "cp" command to complete At this point (at least on my machine), Thunar will remain siezed up. It will not exit. (I use the "ps" and the "kill" command to get rid of it.) -T
I do believe Thunar is off the hook here. Please see these two Kernel.org bugs: Dump of ext3 runs very slowly: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8636 Unusable system (ie slow) when copying large files: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7372 -T
