Most probably by adjusting the Gtk theme.

I can't make it happen. Is it possible to have an option in the rc file ?

See for example what is done in the greybird theme.
This should be the relevant part:

style "sidepane"
{
       base[NORMAL]    = shade (1.55,@selected_bg_color)
}

widget_class "ThunarWindow.GtkTable.GtkHPaned.ThunarShortcutsPane*" style "sidepane"
widget_class "ThunarWindow.GtkTable.GtkHPaned.ThunarTreePane*" style "sidepane"
