Description Daniel Pielmeier 2007-07-28 10:44:07 CEST
A few days ago i recognized when log in to xfce the startup time increased. I mean the time between hitting 'enter' after giving the password within the login-manager and the disappearing of the xfce splash-screen.

Before i think it tooks less than 5 seconds. Now the startup time is about 13 seconds.

I did not remember changing any settings nor updating an xfce-package.

I have attached two pictures generated with bootchart, one is from system startup (bootchart_boot.png) and the other one is from the login (bootchart_login.png). The interesting one for you maybe the login-picture, but maybe the other one gives also some information.

At the login picture you can see the startup-time of xfce-session starting at 72s and the startup time of conky which is the only program i start wih the autostart function of xfce at 85s. Conky appears immediately after the disappearing of the splash-screen.

Don`t be confused about the overall long startup-time of 85s. The time between 35s (starting X and slim) and 72s i needed to set up bootchart for capturing the login process.

What could be the reason for xfce needing so much time for startup, as it is a bit annoying? If you need additional information feel free to ask!

Regards,

Daniel

Currently, xfce4-session restarts only one program at a time. So, according to your picture, xfce4-panel causes most of the delay before conky is started. Maybe you added a new panel plugin that blocks the panel for some time?

Thank you for your fast reply!

I have two panels configured the one on top has only a few program-starters, the xfce menu, the volume panel and the shutdown or lock screen panel. The other one at the bottom has the clock panel, the task panel, the workspaces and the one which shows the running applications.

I didn't changed anything, but i can delete the panels and set them up from scratch, maybe this helps!

It seems that the problem was with one of the panels.
Now the startup time is as fast as before unfortunately i have deleted both panels and at startup the panels are not loaded automatically. I have to start the panel manually with entering 'xfce4-panel' in the terminal.
I have searched in the settings but found nothing to start the panel at login. What is the proper way to let the panel stat automatically after login?

Well, startup is fast, because xfce4-panel is not restarted anymore. ;-)

Open the "Sessions and Startup" settings and be sure to check "Automatically save session on logout". Then logout/login, and panel should appear as part of the session again.

Yeah, but starting the panel manually was also fast again.

That did the trick, thank you very much for your immediate help! I think this bug could be closed now!

It'd be nice to figure out what caused the panel slowdown. Maybe you can attach your panel configuration here, so Jasper can have a look.
Comment 9 Daniel Pielmeier 2007-07-28 13:30:23 CEST
Unfortunately i have deleted the old configuration in $HOME/.config/xfce4/panel.
I can send the actual configuration if you want. What do you need, just the panel.xml in that directoy?
Comment 10 Benedikt Meurer editbugs 2007-07-28 15:49:53 CEST
Probably. Reassigning the bug to Jasper.
Comment 11 Jasper Huijsmans editbugs 2007-09-23 16:18:00 CEST
Since I didn't hear any other reports about unexplained slowdowns of the panel, I'm going to assume this is fixed now. If it happens again, please reopen the report. Thanks for letting us know.
