Would be nice if .themes could be moved to $XDG_DATA_DIRS, ~/.local/share/themes and User Interface settings would find them as per base dir spec.

Also applies to .icons, are there others?

Will gtk actually honor this for gtk themes and icon themes?  As of what version?

Meh, sorry about that. There is a open bug[1] with patch to GTK+ for it but didn't realize it's not supported yet.
