it would be great if one could simply add a shorcut for an application on the panel without having to manually specify the path and icon for the launcher.

This isn't really a bug, rather a "whishlist" bug, like in debian. Anyway I've made a small script, really dirty - sorry -, that explains what I mean. The script is there

 You just do xfdesktop2launcher <application> and it adds an icon on the panel if it finds a corresponding .desktop file on the system. Of course it would be great to be able to do that without killing the panel when it's running.... and maybe with a nice gui.

We need something like this in the feature for better integration with the application finder.

4.8 panel will have a command line option to add new plugins with optional arguments. To create a launcher from the command line run something like this:

xfce4-panel --add launcher <list of .desktop file for the new launcher>

Devel branch has been merged in master. A 4.7.0 release will follow soon. If you think this bug is not fixed? Feel free to reopen the bug.
