Description Giovanni Ceribella 2006-12-20 14:50:53 CET
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; it; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20060601 Firefox/2.0 (Ubuntu-edgy)
Build Identifier:

When I create a directory or a file on the Desktop from the terminal or an other location, the file/directory doesn't appear on the desktop. The same thing happens when I move an object to Trash: the object icon stay on the desktop. I killed xfdesktop and restarted it, but it says:

** (xfdesktop:30012): CRITICAL **: Unusable XfceDesktopIconStyle: 2. Unable to display desktop icons.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Create an object on the Desktop from a terminal or an other location / Move an object from the Desktop to the Trash.

Actual Results:
The icon doesn't appear on the Desktop / The icon is still dispay on the Desktop.

Expected Results:
The icon of a created file/directory has to apper. The icon of a deleted file/directory has to fade away.

All software of XFCE 4.4 was installed by the graphical istaller dowloaded from www.xfce.org . The XFCE 4.3 run normally on this computer, an IBM Think Pad. I've looked in bugs list, but I found nothing.

If you're seeing:

** (xfdesktop:30012): CRITICAL **: Unusable XfceDesktopIconStyle: 2. Unable to
display desktop icons.

on console, that means xfdesktop wasn't compiled with desktop file icon support (needs the correct versions of thunar-vfs and dbus). Maybe this is a problem with the installer, or you have outdated versions of those libraries on your system that's confusing the configure script, but it's not a problem with xfdesktop.

Of course, the installer *does* compile xfdesktop with icon support. Maybe the user is missing some libs, but if all requirements are present, icon support is there.

Reporter: did the installer give you any indication that it was or wasn't going to compile file icon support into xfdesktop? Did it check for thunar-vfs and dbus? Did the dbus check fail? A new requirement in 4.4rc2 is that you need *both* thunar-vfs and dbus (and dbus-glib, if you have a post-1.0 dbus); either one missing will disable compiling support for file icons.

Brian, note that the installer checks only for requirements. dbus is not a requirement, neither are icons.

No mention is made in the installer for optional libs at compile time.

The installer should not break if dbus is missing as dbus is optional.

Ah ok, I didn't know if the installer checked for optional dependencies as well. I've never used it, so...

Other option would be to look through configure logs. Not sure if the installer keeps these available after the install is over, or if it deletes them. Or maybe there's a 'verbose' option to the installer that tells it to print out all the configure/compiler output?

Sounds to me like you need to run FAM (File Alteration Monitor). http://oss.sgi.com/projects/fam/

Without it or a similar alternative, your desktop (and Thunar viewed directories in general I believe) will not refresh automatically.
