Some applications needs to have the appropriate working directory set to function correctly. AFAIK most other desktop systems has this option for shortcuts, menu items, etc. Today the solution seems to be making a bash script for each application that has this problem. Thats probebly not a big problem for most xfce users, but its a bit much to excpect from linux newbies.
