Personally they annoy the hell out of me as they look a little out of place and remove the smooth unbroken look of the task bar. I can understand their use but it would be nice to have an option to hide/remove them.
One *good* thing about them: they provide somewhere to click on to allow configuration of the taskbar plugin should the containing panel not be full width or should the task bar be filled.
Done in new panel code. Configuration of the plugin is now also possible through the panel's properties dialog with contains a tab for moving, removing, adding and editing plugins in a treeview-like interface.
Task list handle is optional already at least in version 4.6. But I am against making it possible to hamper access to the panel item configuration editor by using the panel item configuration editor.
You have a good reason for that? Every plugins config can be accessed by right clicking the plugin, sometimes this is a bit harder for example for the tasklist or systray, but always possible. The item editor in the properties dialog is something extra to make it easier and providing an overview of all the plugins in a panel.

I find it impossible for the task list, if there are enough applications running. Too hard anyway for both task list and system tray. > The item editor in the properties dialog is something extra to make > it easier and providing an overview of all the plugins in a panel. Do you mean you can configure panel plugins via Applications > Settings > Panel as for the new panel? Yes that is a good extra and/or workaround. I have seen something similar for LXPanel. But if the old way is retained, IMO make it apti

Created attachment 2676 Item tab screenshot The tasklist handle is visible by default, but some people want to hide it, well I can understand that. They know they have to pay a small accessibility price, but it will be easier in 4.8 because of the items list in the panel preferences. So I really don't understand what you're worrying about.

Good that it is default. The accessibility price is that it breaks the feature (of being always able to configure the panel item by right-clicking on it or on its specific area and then clicking on "Properties"). On the other hand I don't understand how a small handle can annoy the hell out of Ben, but I guess he does not have big problems in life then ;) The handle looks bad in vertical panel, but I just filed another bug report about it. Furthermore, I would try to make the handle look more belonging to the task list (and not to the item on the other side). I hope configuring the panel items does not become too complicated, but I guess adding more ways don't hurt. I kind of like the old way of editing on place. It can be very intuitive: e.g. you know which of the launchers you are editing as you click on it.
