in my .local/share/sddm/xorg-session.log the first few lines are:

_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root
/usr/bin/iceauth: creating new authority file /run/user/1000/ICEauthority
gpg-agent[3423]: WARNUNG: "--write-env-file" ist eine veraltete Option - sie hat keine Wirkung.
gpg-agent[3424]: gpg-agent (GnuPG) 2.2.20 started

(xfce4-session:3276): xfce4-session-WARNING **: 23:26:54.017: gpg-agent returned no PID in the variables

(xfce4-session:3276): xfce4-session-WARNING **: 23:26:54.032: xfsm_manager_load_session: Something wrong with /home/mcd/.cache/sessions/xfce4-session-arctic:0, Does it exist? Permissions issue?

ignore the first two.

it looks like the usage of gpg-agent needs to be updated?

the autostart behaviour changed in gpg 2.1.
look here for documentation of the new behaviour:

If you have any way of testing the patch referred to in the original bugreport please do.
It looks logically sound, but I don't dare to merge it without having a way to test. (Also, if you know how to test please share it so I can confirm the fix.)
