ArchLinux is a rolling release distro depending on the most recent upstream packages (usually installed `as is' with no modifications). XFCE 4.14, especially:

xfce4-panel 4.14.0-1

After 4.12->4.14 upgrade I can use the old Notification Area but it behaves as an obsolete not supported applet. Moreover:

Panel -> Add New Items

displays this applet greyed; I can't add a new one.

What do you mean by not supported? It doesn't work?

It's because this plugin is unique per screen, probably there is already an existing instance at Panel -> Panel Preferences... -> Items

1. Not supported in the sense that without square icons or frame this applet size is so reduced in size it is not clickable. If there are icons those are too tight.

2. Oups! I didn't know that only one such applet is allowed per screen.

Changing the Maximum icon size at Panel -> Panel Preferences -> Items -> Notification Area makes any difference?
A screenshot would be helpful too.

Sorry, I was on holiday with another notebook. I've just attached the screenshot. The NA directly follows the workspace switcher. The volume icon is placed on it. As you can see there is too little space before that icon so the NA is in fact not clickable. Selecting [square icons] solves the problem but this option is not enabled by default.

Maybe this is side of effect of border being disabled by default (IIRC) plus gtk3 theme differences.
One can still get to the notification area properties via Right click panel -> Panel -> Panel Preferences... -> Items -> select Notification Area -> Button with gear icon

By the way, now this bug looks like a duplicate of Bug 15480.
