Sort menu item could be changed from:

Sort>
    Sort by file name
    Sort by file type
    Sort by date

To just:

Sort by>
    file name
    file type
    date

To avoid having all the menu items start with "Sort by".

Or maybe:

Sort by>
    file name
    file type
    file date

Dont know if the last (date) is the file date or maybe EXIF metadata or something.

I'm not sure about that: the options here ("file name", "file type", "date") are a continuation of the sentence started with "Sort by".
Actually, none of your suggested options starts with a capital letter either.

they are menu items.
It seems they always start with big.
But just use what you think correct.
