Hi all. In trying to remove duplicate archive managers I've found the thunar-archive-plugin isn't working (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2417504&p=13854305#post13854305). This discussion got me thinking about how the Thunar docs pages (https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/start) doesn't alert users to the development sites which are often where users can discover that the bug they've been living with for ages was actually fixed long ago (https://github.com/xfce-mirror/thunar and https://git.xfce.org/xfce/thunar).

Also, the start page says plugins can be installed but neither it nor the subpages (e.g. https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/archive) say how. Since the answer is easy (sudo apt install thunar-archive-plugin) it would be great to have this explicitly added to the pages, otherwise users (like me) intuitively google or the problem and find pages with old dead links (e.g. https://goodies.xfce.org/releases/thunar-volman) and can conclude that plugins are no longer supported.

In addition:
- For the archive manager plugin it would be great to proactively point users to this xarchiver fix: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2384394&p=13756447&viewfull=1#post13756447

- For custom actions (https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/custom-actions), references to gksu should be addressed, since gksu is no longer available in the default repositories. (As an aside if anyone has any suggestions for how to deal with this I'm all ears, it sucks losing these features. Even it the answer is just reinstall gksu!)

- For media tags (https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/media-tags) my rename doesn't show a picklist & properties has no audio tab yet the plugin is installed. Possibly an issue with my 1.8.4 Git version of Thunar? This is an actual bug so I'll search it separately (it's potentially related to my archive context not working) but if anyone reading this happens to have any info I'd be grateful to hear.

As a generality, I'd be happy to be added to the Docs team if people are amenable to it; totally fine if not. I recognise commenting is the dullest part of coding but (especially as a non coder) it's the documentation which can make the difference between people using a product or giving up.

Cheers all

Hi,

Thank you for your comment. Yes, the documentation needs love. Please note that the doc should try to be distribution agnostic (and not refer to only apt-get etc).
Also, you are right, the goodies wiki is really obsolete, myabe we should kill it, and reintegrate needed documentation on docs.xfce.org

About the xarchiver fix: it is not an xfce project, so the fix should go to the upstream project.
About media-tags, maybe it's a bug, I don't use it atm :)

We will be happy to get help. We can give you write access to the doc if you want to contribute :)
Also, If you have time, you can come to chat on our IRC channel #xfce-dev on freenode : https://docs.xfce.org/contribute/start?#communication
