pic #1 LM 18.3 OK, pix #2 "the black hole" in menulibre (LM 19) and pic #3 my workaround

Hi.

My old pc runs Linux Mint 18.3 xfce 4.12.3 with whisker 1.7.3-0ppa1~xenial1 and my new pc Linux Mint 19 xfce 4.12.3 with whisker 2.1.7-0ppa~bionic1.

Whisker under Linux Mint comes with a folder "OTHER", which in German reads "Sonstiges" where I used to put starters for my own applications.

See pic #1 for Linux Mint 18.3.

Pic #2 shows that folder "OTHER" in Linux Mint 19.

Trying to put a new starter with my application inside that folder "OTHER" = "Sonstiges", that folder behaves like a black hole. Nothing shows up.

I am using menulibre for changes. Reopening whisker with menulibre the starter I created is gone!

Linux Mint 18.3 - no problems with that!

So I created a new folder (pic #3) "Anwendungen", which behaves normally.

Can someone please have a look into this. Thank you.

Whisker Menu does not handle figuring out what items should be in the menu; that is done by the Xfce library garcon. If you add a regular Xfce applications menu to your panel, does it show the missing category and items?

next try to visualize the issue, I see ....

Hope, I got your comment right ...

I did another test. LM 19 in a vbox with language set to English.

Please see attached pic. Start left up ...

#1 The whisker menu -> #2 right click on whisker icon, menulibre starts

-> #3 I have midnight commander installed -> #4 and move the (mc) starter from folder system to folder other

can not do a save, so toggle the switch "hide from menu" and now I can do a save now

close menulibre and open whisker: folder other does not show

-> #5 open whisker again with menulibre, mc starter is gone

-> #6 also not back in folder system

-> #7 next try with mc starter pushed to folder graphics

-> #8 that works.

As I said, Whisker Menu does not find the items for the menu. I need you to test if this issue happens with Xfce's menu as well. Please add the applet "Applications Menu" to your panel and see if the "Other" submenu exists.

next try .... ;-)

Hopefully that helps a bit .....

I added "Applications Menu" to my panel here. "OTHER" is NOT showing up there.

In whisker "OTHER" is set per default to visible, but all starters inside "OTHER" are set to NOT visible.

I did set starter "mono runtime" to visible, saved that setting, closed menulibre. "OTHER" not showing in whisker. Opened menulibre again and "mono runtime" is gone.

Please see in picture I have attached.

So, if that has nothing to do with your whisker app, who is to blame? I am now thinking, the guys, who put LM 19 Xfce together, should have a look.

I posted in German LM forum, put did not find a response there. Therefore I posted today in LM international forum and hope, someone can crosscheck that issue.

Had a look at Xubuntu 18.04.1

Installed Xubuntu 18.04.1 in a vbox. Same! So the LM people took it over from the Xubuntu guys.

Now I'll have a look at DEBIAN Stretch 9.6 Xfce ........

The garcon library is used by both Whisker Menu and the Xfce applications menu to find what programs are on your computer. I would probably look there to figure out why "Other" isn't showing up.

Graeme, I give up.

I myself have a workaround for that.

Sorry for bothering you - br

It's no bother. I'm glad you found a workaround. I just wish I knew where the bug actually is.
