Humm, the current stacktrace does not help me much ( no line numbers since the thunar debug info is missing )

Two options which come to my mind:

1) Compile and install thunar from source with debug symbols ( ./autogen.sh --enable-debug ) so that you get more info from the backtrace next time it crashes

or

2) Compress and attach your coredump to the bug, together with your thunar binary .... it might be possible to add symbols to the binary via gdb, but I am not too experienced with that. However since that will be simpler for you, we can have a try for 2) first.

Possibly manjaro provides a "thunar-debug" package, which contains the stripped-off debug-sybols ?

manjaro is based on arch linux, so possibly this could help you to get debug-info into your backtrace:

thanks for getting back to me this quickly. quite new in the linux realm so you might need to "hold my hand" a bit.

i do not see "thunar-debug" (manjaro using aur: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/?O=0&SeB=nd&K=thunar&outdated=&SB=n&SO=a&PP=50&do_Search=Go). however, i do find "thunar-devel 1.8.1-1" (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/thunar-devel). do you know if that outputs any additional debug information?

i did find a related post here:
https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=12266

and executed these commands for starting thunar in debug mode:
(installed gdb  8.1.1-1 / http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/)
```
thunar -q
gdb
file /usr/bin/thunar
run
```

please note that it says:
- "Reading symbols from /usr/bin/thunar...(no debugging symbols found)...done."

OUTPUT (BUT NO CRASH, YET):
```
found another helpful page, https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=49143#p49143, with a nifty command presenting related core dump data. however, it seems similar to what i provided earler. does this mean there is no additional info in the core dump?
Usually the *-dev packages only contain the headers of a package. That is only required if you want to build  packageB which has a dependency to packageA.  Afaik it wIll not help for getting the debug-symbols.
To get  the debug symbols into your thunar-binary, in Arch(and probably in manjaro), it looks like you need to rebuild thunar with 'makepkg' .... I cannot say much about the details, since I use debian which uses a different approach on that.
Best try to follow the related WIki packe and ask the arch/manjaro community, if you get stuck:
PKGBUILD
After years using Arch I might be mistaken, but I don't think there are *-dev packages[1] as for Debian/Ubuntu. There are two ways which you can help us:
- Easy approach:
You can view coredumps with coredumpctl, pay attention to the entries for Thunar and take note of the number of PID column (the most recent occurrence). Then run: coredumpctl dump [PID number] | zip > ~/coredump.zip
And send us that file. However, as Alex mentioned, without debug symbols we may not find the part of Thunar's code that is crashing (I can try anyway).
- Not so easy approach:
More useful to us, but you have to build Thunar from source. It can be a bit tricky, specially for users new to Linux. Since you use Manjaro (Arch under the hood), I have prepared a PKGBUILD (see attachment) which basically automates the whole process. Download it, put in an empty folder (e.g. thunar-build), and run in a terminal from that folder: makepkg -si
At the end it will ask to replace the thunar package, confirm and run: pkill -i thunar
Now you will be running Thunar with debug enabled, once it crashes you can a meaningful backtrace with: coredumpctl info [PID number]
After playing with "thunar-debug", you should restore the package provided by Manjaro with: pacman -S thunar (you may now delete that "thunar-build").
Well, I hope you are not overwhelmed with so many instructions and commands. Let's try the "Easy approach" first.
Thanks for reporting and helping us!
thanks a lot for detailed instructions. the easy approach was easy indeed. (`$ coredumpctl dump 25007 | zip > coredump.zip`) however, the coredump file became 22.5 mb so was unable to attach it to this issue:
```
Request Entity Too Large
The requested resource
/attachment.cgi
does not allow request data with POST requests, or the amount of data provided in the request exceeds the capacity limit.
```
anyhow, it can be downloaded here:
https://filedn.com/l83EzxKLLIU7GFoqO2C1bgY/180831_thunarBug/
if this doesn't give you sufficient information do let me know. then i will try the "not so easy approach".
i don't know if it is of any use, but below is output of `coredumpctl` which gives you an overview of the frequency of the thunar crashes (and other faults that have occurred).
```
[klevstul@silentGamerMjr coredump]$ coredumpctl

currently i'm running thunar through gdb. i haven't experienced any crashes yet but i have received some critical errors. no idea if they are related at all.

```
Thanks for the coredump, but no luck so far .. tried to build thunar 1.8.1 from source with debug symbols and run it with your coredump in gdb.
If you as well upload your thunar-binary, I could take another try with it, strip off the debug symbols from my own binary and load them into gdb together with your binary (command add-symbol-file) ... no idea if there is a chance that this will work  ;)   But hey, it will not hurt either ;)
For me the binary  is located here:  "/usr/local/bin/thunar".
thunar binary
sorry. forgot the binary. it has now been attached to this issue.
Comment 12 alexxcons editbugs 2018-09-01 00:08:14 CEST
As well no luck, sorry.
What I tried:
1. Strip of debug symbols from my own thunar binary:
objcopy --only-keep-debug thunar thunar.sym
2. Run gdb with the coredump and your binary
gdb thunar coredump
3. Check the hex address to which the symbols need to get attached (.text section)
readelf -WS thunar
4. Load the debug symbols in gdb
add-symbol-file thunar.sym 0x020010
5. print the backtrace
My quess would be that debug symbols only fit to the original binary from which they got stripped .. same architecture, same build flags, etc.
Looks like you need to try a different approach .. how about this PKGBUILD provided by Andre Miranda ?
Comment 13 Andre Miranda editbugs 2018-09-01 03:17:18 CEST
I also tried to load that coredump, but got lots of warnings telling the libraries (gtk, libexo, libxfce4ui...) are of different versions. The backtrace was not useful at all:
(gdb) bt full
#0  0x0000560bc28ab7a7 in  ()
#1  0x0000560bc28e80e1 in  ()
#2  0x0000560bc28e33bf in  ()
#3  0x00007f49cdb95a4d in  ()
#4  0x0000000000000000 in  ()
So if it's not ask too much, please try the not-so-easy-approach, for sure it will yield a meaningful backtrace.
Thanks again
Comment 14 frode b k 2018-09-01 08:57:30 CEST
ok. i will try the more advanced approach. however, i have no time today. i will try to do it tomorrow or as quickly as i have a couple of hours available. i will report back.
thanks for looking into this.
Comment 17 frode b k 2018-09-12 14:16:37 CEST
a follow up for me. i still haven't gone through with the advanced method for debugging. until now i have just been running thunar via gdb. today i got another crash. this is what was outputted through gdb:
Yes please, the snippet you posted only tell us that the crash occured in libgobject, but we cannot know from which part of Thunar that function was called. You should be able to get the full backtrace (no need for the core dump yet) with coredumpctl, first get a list of crashes, then find Thunar's crashes, get the backtrace with coredumpctl info <PID>.
I guess it should be coredumpctl info 3311
Comment 21 frode b k 2018-09-16 09:13:44 CEST
ufortunately `coredumpctl` doesn't show any recent thunar crashes. maybe the reason was due to me running thunar through `gdb`. i've now started thunar the normal way. i will report back, with backtrace, as soon as i experience another crash.
If thunar crashes while you run it through gdb, you can type "bt" or "backtrace" into the gdb prompt to get the backtrace.
Or, the other route:
In order to get your core dumped, you will need to enable coredumps:
https://stackoverflow.com/a/2919398/1599887
E.g. you can put "ulimit -c unlimited" into your ~/.profile.
That should enable coredumps automatically for all applications
You as well can execute it in the terminal, and than (re)start thunar from the same terminal:
ulimit -c unlimited
thunar -q;thunar
The provided backtraces do not contain Thunar symbols. I learned that makepkg by default strips those debug symbols. Please rebuild and install Thunar with the updated PKGBUILD (this time I checked the binary with running in gdb).
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yay, great, this time the coredump provides useful info !
After some trial and error ( the method mentioned in the coredump looks all fine ), I think I am able to reproduce the bug. However for me thunar does not always crash, but most times only emits some "thunar-CRITICAL " messages into the console and draws a blanc tree-view in all open thunar windows.
So it looks like the problem is related to the tree-view and only occurs if more than one thunar window is open.
To reproduce I do the following:
1. Open fresh thunar:  thunar -q; thunar
2. Switch to tree view if not already visible: View --> SidePane --> Tree
3. Open new window: File --> New Window  ( CTRL + N )
4. Close the new window ( CTRL + Q )
5. Toggle View-->"show hidden files" ( CTRL + H )
Could you please check if you can reproduce the bug like that as well ?
A different bug whicj probably is related: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11903
Comment 30 alexxcons editbugs 2018-09-20 22:57:37 CEST
Here the CRITICAL Message I get:
(thunar:12720): thunar-CRITICAL **: thunar_tree_view_visible_func: assertion '(((__extension__ ({ GTypeInstance *__inst = (GTypeInstance*) ((user_data)); GType __t = ((thunar_tree_view_get_type ())); gboolean __r; if (!__inst) __r = (0); else if (__inst->g_class && __inst->g_class->g_type == __t) __r = (!(0)); else __r = g_type_check_instance_is_a (__inst, __t); __r; }))))' failed
Comment 31 frode b k 2018-09-20 23:10:28 CEST
sweet. finally, i manage to provide you with some useful info. i can confirm that i always do run two thunar windows at the same time. hence that might be a requirement for the bug to occur. however, i never close one of the windows, as the steps above show.
following your steps, at least for the first time, i got a CRITICAL error, but no crash:
```
(thunar:16183): thunar-CRITICAL **: 23:04:34.326: thunar_tree_view_visible_func: assertion '(((__extension__ ({ GTypeInstance *__inst = (GTypeInstance*) ((user_data)); GType __t = ((thunar_tree_view_get_type ())); gboolean __r; if (!__inst) __r = (0); else if (__inst->g_class && __inst->g_class->g_type == __t) __r = (!(0)); else __r = g_type_check_instance_is_a (__inst, __t); __r; }))))' failed
```
will it be useful if i provide you with more coredumps, when i get them? if they show some different info that is. i can just compare the lines at the top.
Comment 32 frode b k 2018-09-20 23:16:35 CEST
i can also mention that sometimes the crash has happened while i was copying a lot of data from one location to another. other times it has happened when i was navigating through thunar. i have not noticed any pattern in my behaviour leading to the crashes. however, there might very well be some. as well, maybe there are several reasons for these crashes. if it's not normal to run multiple thunar windows at the same time there might be more bugs. at the above, related bug, shows. i can provide more coredumps when the crashes happen. now i know the drill ((:
Comment 33 frode b k 2018-09-20 23:20:43 CEST
and, i always do run tree view. so i guess your assumption is right.
bug requirements (if that is an expression):
- two (or more?) thunar windows
- tree view
another dump. the crash did happen when i tried expanding an entry in the tree view in the left panel when i had another window open.
Comment 35 frode b k 2018-09-21 13:56:15 CEST
fyi: i started running only one thunar window, to avoid more crashes. this doesn't help. thunar keeps crashing for me despite only one window running.
Comment 36 Andre Miranda editbugs 2018-09-21 14:05:15 CEST
@alexxcons I can crash Thunar following your instructions, though the backtrace is not related to the one reported here:
#0  0x00005619d1aba3e7 thunar_file_is_gfile_ancestor (thunar)
#1  0x00005619d1af5710 thunar_tree_view_visible_func (thunar)
#4  0x00007f57c35ac9a1 n/a (libglib-2.0.so.0)
#5  0x00007f57c35ac9a1 n/a (libglib-2.0.so.0)
#7  0x00005619d1af57c6 thunar_tree_view_set_show_hidden (thunar)
...
I can also confirm that crash only happens if the tree view is enabled (CTRL+E), but hidden files should not be visible when the first window is created.
@frode try to disable the tree view, use the shortcuts view (CTRL+B) for sometime so we can be sure the tree view is the culprit.
today thunar crashed once more, despite not using the tree view. when i looked at the coredump it looked different. hence, i filed this as a separate bug: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14724
Comment 40 alexxcons editbugs 2018-10-02 22:48:40 CEST
Found a fix for Bug #14714, and I am almost sure that the patch will as well fix your bug.
There are two different routes to "thunar_tree_view_visible_func". You took one in your backtrace, I took the other in my backtrace. On both routes a invalid pointer will be used in some circumstances. ( details explained in 14714 )
I would be very happy if you could test the patch, to make sure that it fixes this bug.
However this would require you to compile thunar from source ... you want to take a try for it ?
