Created attachment 7736 This shows inconsistent and non-consecutive workspace names on a panel, as well as where to include an option to show workspaces by either name or number The desktop switcher for Panel should permanently show either all desktops by their name or their number. It instead shows the desktop name, but only until a new workspace is created. After a new workspace is created, the workspace switcher displays the workspace by its number. - This behavior is especially confusing to users with something like the i3 tiling window manager, which allows users to frequently closes and start new workspaces. In the case of i3, the workspace names retain their relevance as visual identifiers, even when there are gaps between consecutive workspace numbers. - - - PROBLEM BEHAVIOR: * Workspace names are shown sometimes, and not other times (workspace numbers) * Sometimes workspaces are shown in non-consecutive order (as in the picture) * Sometimes workspace names include with work, 'Workspace' while not at othertimes - - - DESIRED BEHAVIOR * for reference on the desired behavior, refer here: http://feeblenerd.blogspot.com/2016/08/walkthrough-for-lubuntu-with-i3-tiling.html * LXQt provides an option to display either names or numbers * Workspaces never display in non-consecutive order of their respective desktop numbers * Workspaces are consistent in naming, ie: 1, 2, 5, 10 (see attached picture for undesired behavior) - - - CURRENT WORKAROUND: * see: https://feeblenerd.blogspot.com/2015/11/pretty-i3-with-xfce.html * (This workaround requires installing two Ubuntu-specific repositories who's packages are in development by one or two developers, and presently out of date.)
Until xfce4-panel 4.15 the panel *always* showed the workspace name and never the numbering. Only in your case that's the same for the first few workspaces. In xfce4-panel 4.15 I introduced an option to show numbering.
