prerequisites: panel has a notification area, autohide is set to always. 1. show panel 2. right-click on a program icon in notification area to invoke its menu 3. click anywhere on the desktop outside of menu and panel area OR click on a menu item in such a manner that mouse pointer is outside of the panel area: menu closes but panel doesn't hide Tested with onboard on-screen keyboard and nm-applet from the gnome network manager.
