There are some people who won't use XFCE because it suffers from horrible screen-tearing on older hardware. I discovered that if I uninstall xserver-xorg-video-intel, I can solve the screen-tearing issue. I think that driver should either be repaired somehow or perhaps it should be discarded upon installation of XFCE.
