Replacing a symlink with its actual file sometimes deletes both files

I cut (yes, should have copied...) a file in Thunar, and pasted it in a directory containing a symlink pointing to the file.

As expected, I was prompted if I would like to cancel the operation, overwrite the file, etc. I overwrote the file.

Both files were then missing from the filesystem. There was no way to undo the operation.

I tried to reproduce the bug and could not do it. However, even if this happens 1/10000 of the time, it's still too often. This configuration file represented hours of research and work that I will have to do all over again.

Sorry I don't have more information.
