At least on my setup, when I click on the pulseaudio plugin in the panel, it only allows me to change the volume. It should provide playback control buttons, but it does not. I do not know if it is my specific setup, or if it's actually the plugin - I expect it's the plugin, but I'm not sure.
For the multimedia playback controls to display, the following must be true. 1. The plugin must be version 0.3.0 or newer. 2. The plugin must be compiled with MPRIS2 support (--enable-mpris2 flag) 3. "Control playback of media players" must be enabled in the preferences dialog. 4. The application you wish to control needs to support MPRIS2. Clementine and Spotify support this by default. Parole requires it's MPRIS2 plugin to be enabled. Other applications have varied support.
I can confirm that Banshee has an MPRIS plugin and I have it enabled. But I cannot confirm which version of MPRIS it supports.
